As a personal exercise and to answer various questions that reach us in the mail and in the comments about how to distribute furniture in a square living room, I have created 15 plans with different arrangements of furniture in a square living room of 20 m². These meters and the design of the room allow us different combinations. Some of them make the most of the available space, others not so much.
It should be noted that all the plans have been made with a fixed and recurring element, such as the television cabinet on the right, so that the reader always has a fixed reference. Naturally, the arrangement of the tv cabinet is to taste and the plans can be adapted to any living room, simply by turning the furniture.
Generally, to optimize the space of a square living room and, obviously, depending on the type of furniture (especially the sofa), there are usually a few compositions that really make good use of the space; In this article we are going to see 15 ways, which means that some are obviously not made with the aim of taking advantage of and optimizing space. Still, I found it interesting to do and share them. With that said, let’s look at these 15 different ways to distribute furniture in a square room.
For those who like both watching television and taking naps on the sofa, and also eating as a family in the dining room, this composition of furniture with chaise longue on the right if you look at it from the front, and a dining table of up to 6 diners, it can come in handy.
Without dining table, a room that encourages and invites conversation. An ideal arrangement for social settings, with two identical sofas facing each other and on the sides, the tv cabinet and a library shelf. The coffee table rounded favors the circulation and flow of the room. Remember that a coffee table is placed approximately 40 centimeters from the sofa, to be able to move the legs and move to the sofa in comfort.
If you use the living room to watch TV and little else, this telecentric arrangement is effective. A large four-seater sofa to watch television with the family or to lie down comfortably for a nap. Two armchairs on the sides of the tv cabinet facing the sofa to encourage conversation when friends come, or to turn them and face them on television and a large library on the back of the sofa.
Obviously, it is not the best distribution of furniture, since putting the sofa diagonally loses a lot of space, but as I said before, I found it interesting and decided to share it.
With a large 3-seater chaise longue and two facing seats. This arrangement works well both for watching TV lying down comfortably and for social gatherings.
Being a little more practical, we have this other arrangement in which two two-seater sofas allow us to rest and watch television, and we can also introduce a dining table attached to the wall that can be separated when visitors come.
If we do not want to give up anything, this furniture arrangement is designed to optimize the space available in the living room and obtain both a large dining area to gather with family and friends, as well as an area where we can watch television and take a nap in a large four-seater sofa, plus two armchairs facing each other to expand the seating areas for guests.
Similar to the previous one but lighter, with less furniture, which allows for more spacious passageways and a less ornate dining room. If we use this composition, the back of the sofa will allow us to clearly delimit the two dining areas. For this distribution to work, you must measure and make sure that you need at least 90 centimeters between the sofa and the table to slide and move the chairs without problem.
Another arrangement that allows us to enjoy a dining table as a spacious seating area with a large chaise longue sofa.
For social gatherings the distribution that we see above these lines is perfect. The seats facing the sofa allow those present to speak from the front. The table between the two seats offers comfort to the occupants, without having to get up to the coffee table. If you use this composition, the side table must be at least 15 centimeters from the armchairs or armchairs.
Another good way to distribute sofa furniture when you don’t need a dining table in the living room is the one we see above in this paragraph. It is a square distribution as well as telecentric.
If we do without the dining table, the composition is more fluid with wide and unobstructed passage areas.
This other composition offers us a favorable social environment, to chat or to watch television.
In this other composition the space has also been well used. Obtaining two different areas, turning the living room into a dining room.

And now, after looking at these 14 examples, let’s look at what is the most efficient and optimized way to furnish a regular square living room.
With the basic furniture, such as a large three-seater sofa and a dining table for up to 8 people, the correct distribution of furniture in a square room is diagonally, as we see in the image. In this way the passage areas are wider, achieving that the room appears visually larger.
All these compositions are made with an online tool, very, very simple to use and that will allow us to adjust the furniture to our living room or bedroom, thus finding the perfect distribution depending on what elements we need in our living room, called Roomstyler.
